I feel like I am already pretty strong with rituals. I do believe that having procedures, rituals and routines in place makes the day easier and more manageable. It also reduces behaviors and sets the stage for expectation which is so important for the little guys in predicting their day.
I have tried over the past few years to incorporate more collaborative learning with small groups. It is a slow process with kindergarteners and depending on the group of the kids, we can get to a good place where they are able to work together as a team. I am hoping to further this idea as I move up to 1st grade. I would love to set up regular opportunities for students to have leadership roles and teamwork positions. This is something I have NOT done with kindergarten.
Wendy, I’d love to know more about how you use collaborative learning in small groups. I’d like to build that into my class too. Also, when I was reading, I thought of you when the author suggested embedding real-life professions and trades into the curriculum. I love that you think outside the box and set up our walking field trips....these are authentic learning experiences- thank you!
I want to work on integrating technology in my classroom in a thoughtful, intentional way. I’ve read about kinders being able to use iPads to show their learning- by taking photos of their work or recording themselves explaining something. I would also like to use iBook to create learning stations specific to our themes...also maybe teach students to make their own books.
I think next year I’d like to focus on behavior builders, specifically appropriate social/emotional responses. I’ve borrowed Carrie’s second steps curriculum and plan to incorporate it into my classroom next year. This year I tried to be more specific about teaching social skills, but kind of trailed off as we got on track as a class. However, I still see the need for a weekly focused time for this. It didn’t become part of our classroom routine each week and I think it should be.
Captive with curriculum makes the most sense in the lit lab. Typical classroom activities don't apply in here but my students need to have more connections to why they need to know this and how will it help me. I need to work on making it more clear in my learning targets of why and how next year.
